Snoring is the vibration of respiratory structures and the resulting sound caused by obstructed airflow during breathing while asleep. In some cases, the sound may be mild, while in others it can be loud and unpleasant. Snoring during sleep may be a sign—or an early warning—of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
Custom-made dental appliances, known as mandibular advancement devices, are a common treatment for snoring. These devices gently move the lower jaw forward, which helps bring the tongue forward and keep the airway open during sleep.
